Bernardo Estévez, Maestro of the Ribeiro

Cultivating discretion, his public appearances are as rare as his wines. Yet Bernardo Estévez crafts some of the finest wines of the Ribeiro appellation. This small and picturesque wine region, located in Galicia, has undergone an undeniable qualitative revival and was historically one of the three great terroirs of the Iberian Peninsula, along with La Rioja and Jerez.

Bernardo follows the philosophy of Masanobu Fukuoka, which can be summarized as not forcing nature to produce more. No tilling of the soil, management of the leaf surface without pruning or leaf removal, subscriptions with plants from the surrounding forests, no herbicides, insecticides, or anti-botrytis treatments... This uncompromising approach forces him to endure the vagaries of the weather. He lost 90% of his harvest in 2020 due to mildew that struck his 2.5 hectares and the approximately 18 red and 7 white grape varieties he cultivates. Forged by the granite, nurtured with patience, these great wines, meant for aging, are released late in the season.
These vintages are produced under the name chanselus “ Chánselus ”, meaning earth and light in Galician, a definition of verticality and an invitation to become aware of the environment around us.
