CLOS DE L'ECOTARD
A mere 3 hectares of vineyards . Nestled on a south-facing limestone hill, it is nothing less than one of the best-kept secrets of the entire Loire Valley. Michel Chevré, who for many years was the vineyard manager for the illustrious Thierry Germain at Domaine des Roches Neuves, crafts three exceptional dry Chenin Blancs here using organic farming methods. He divides his small production into three cuvées: La Haie Nardin, from the sandy-clay soils; Clos de l'Écotard , the estate's flagship wine (planted at 8,000 vines per hectare and aged in various barrels and stoneware jars); and Les Pentes, from a hillside where the limestone outcrops.
The wines produced here are never ostentatious or thin; they are simply right. Perfect ripeness, meticulous aging—we are impressed by the purity and consistency of this exceptional production, which ranks among the most brilliant in the Saumur region.
