ETIENNE CALSAC
Good things come to those who wait! After many long months of anticipation, we are finally in possession of the rare vintages of Etienne Calsac . A name that inspires admiration and excitement among the most discerning wine lovers.
Etienne Calsac, in his early thirties, returned to the estate in 2010 to passionately cultivate the approximately 2.8 hectares of this small vineyard. Etienne has established a clean and efficient cellar to craft haute couture champagnes with meticulous winemaking techniques. This cellar is located in the prestigious Côte des Blancs , more precisely in Avize , a Grand Cru village and one of the most renowned in all of Champagne. Here, he cultivates a few acres of Chardonnay, including one of the rare walled vineyards (clos) of Champagne, Clos des Maladries. The rest of the vineyard is located in the Marne Valley, in Bisseuil.
The estate's vines are cultivated organically, respecting both living organisms and the terroir, to enhance the definition of the future wines. For, as the saying goes, wine is first and foremost made in the vineyard. In this respect, one of the estate's unique features is its revival of ancestral Champagne grape varieties that were on the verge of extinction. These are grape varieties that have... This approach demonstrates both genuine relevance in the face of climate challenges and an obsessive quest for freshness and elegance in its wines. Gathered in the "Les Revenants" cuvée, this wine breathes new life into Arbane (or Arbanne), Pinot Blanc, and Petit Meslier. A true tribute to these historic grape varieties.
Furthermore, for some years now, Etienne has been pushing the envelope a little further by using cork printing , This method involves sealing the bottle before the second fermentation with a stapled cork, rather than a screw cap (also called a wire cage). This cork stopper, as with the screw cap, is removed during disgorging and then replaced with the final cork, which is sealed with the wire cage. This traditional technique, though now rare due to its lack of mechanization, has allowed the wines to gain in precision and expressiveness .
Etienne Calsac's champagnes are above all the work of a man who, through sheer determination, has managed in just a few years to establish his name within the exclusive circle of artisan champagnes. A signature that commands respect for any lover of refined bubbles. An elegant vibration, this ode to a Champagne with rediscovered flavor .
