PEPE RAVENTOS

The world of Cava is intimately linked to the Raventos family. Indeed, it was a Raventos who, in 1872, produced the first bottle of this traditional method. It was initially called "xampany" in reference to Champagne, an iconic region for all lovers of sparkling wines.
It was another Raventos who presided over the Cava Regulatory Council at its inception. Six generations later, José Maria Raventos Vidal, known as Pepe , still heads the family estate.
Convinced that Catalan grape varieties can produce excellent still wines, he decided to create his own project, Can Sumoi . The project is located in an old estate at 650m altitude in the Serra de l'Home mountain range.
The 350-year-old stone walls enclose thirty hectares of old Montonega, Xarel-lo , and Sumoll vines, all cultivated biodynamically. The wines are made with minimal intervention in the cellar, fermented with indigenous yeasts and without the addition of sulfur.
Pepe Raventos is today considered one of the most brilliant winemakers of his generation and his wines are among the most exciting in all of Catalonia .
